St. Georges Caye Resort Belize - Diving, Fishing, Spa Resort

Lionfish Dive Tournament a Success!

Lionfish Dive Tournament a Success!

The team at St. George's cares deeply about protecting the reef and the underwater world. Our Belize island resort is owned and managed by scuba divers and located less than a mile from the amazing Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

One of its biggest threats to the reef right now is the invasive species lion fish. These fast-breeding fish do not have any natural predators. To help keep the population under control, divers all over Belize and the Caribbean use spear guns to hunt these spiny, venomous fish. It takes skill, especially when removing the lionfish from the spear so that you don't get stung by one of their spines! But it's worth it because not only are you removing an invasive predator from the reef, but the delicate white fish is delicious to eat as well.

Over 1,000 Lionfish Removed from Reef during Dive Tournament!

Last week at St. George's Caye Resort we hosted our first "Save The Reef" Lionfish Dive Tournament with several teams of divers competing for biggest caught and most caught in one dive. It was a lot of fun and we hope to have even more divers involved next time. (Read more: Divers Keeping the Barrier Reef Healthy: Lionfish Tournament in October)

Most importantly, we are thrilled to report that combined the teams removed 1,016 lionfish from the reef! This is a huge impact in less than a week. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this possible. The coral reef thanks you too!

Want to Try Spear-Hunting Lionfish?

At St. George's we offer experienced divers the chance to participate in the Lionfish Dive Safari with our dive masters. It's an incredible way to expand your diving skills and do your part to help the reef. Get in touch with Cap'n Ron for more details and to schedule your Belize dive trip!

Seeking adventure in 2017? The experts say: Travel to Belize!

Seeking adventure in 2017? The experts say: Travel to Belize!

We love seeing Belize in the travel news because that means more people will discover this awesome country and want to visit! So we were pleased to see that Belize was selected as a "top adventure tour destination" to visit in 2017 by Stride Travel, a large search and review site for tours and adventure experiences.

You can read the press release here on Belize Breaking News.

Many travelers considering Belize want to spend time both in the jungle and on the beach and have a hard time deciding. We can help!

At St. George's Caye we offer four jungle/beach all-inclusive packages to choose from, so you can spend time on the mainland and on our island and have all of your meals and transportation included. Easy! We work with two different jungle lodges, each offering a different experience in a different part of the country, depending on your interests.

Packages with Mariposa Jungle Lodge & Tours

Located in the heart of Maya country in the Cayo district on the West side of Belize (near Guatemala), Mariposa Jungle Lodge offers a luxury jungle experience with 6 beautiful cabanas and a main lodge for meals. They have a swimming pool, jungle birdwatching tower, and hiking trails onsite. Plus a large variety of adventure, nature, and cultural tours led by their professional in-house tour guides of Mayan descent.

Maya Love & Island Bliss romance package

Maya, Cayo & The Caye adventure package

Packages with Caves Branch Jungle Lodge & Adventure Tours

Located near Belmopan in the center of the country, Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Jungle Lodge is truly in the jungle and focuses on providing fun adrenaline-fueled adventures for the whole family (it's not for everyone, they say so right on their website!). They have treehouse suites, a botanical walking trail, swimming pool, and many of the adventures are right on their property like waterfall repelling and cave tubing.

Jungle Beach Romance honeymoon/romance package

Twice The Paradise adventure package

Yes, definitely! We know not everyone wants to sleep in the jungle and that is okay. You can stay on the beach in one of our private thatch cabanas and take advantage of our guided tours to see more of Belize.

At St. George's we offer a variety of day trips to the mainland so you can climb Mayan ruins or float through caves in an underground river or visit museums and the Belize Zoo. Our convenient central location only 7 miles from Belize City makes for quick travels back and forth for your jungle adventures (it's about a 20 minute boat ride each way).

The best part about staying at St. George's is how close we are to the reef - and with no other dive resorts nearby so you have privacy and seclusion. Explore the barrier reef while diving or snorkeling and you'll likely not see another boat or diver besides our group. You'll see a wide variety of coral and fish and even the occasional dolphin or manatee!

Cap'n Ron has been visiting Belize for more than 18 years and is happy to share his experience to help you plan the perfect Belize all-inclusive vacation. Right now we're offering 10% off any jungle/beach package with Mariposa Jungle Lodge if you book by October 31, 2016. Good for travel now through December 2017. So what are you waiting for? :)

Divers Keeping the Barrier Reef Healthy: Lionfish Tournament in October

Divers Keeping the Barrier Reef Healthy: Lionfish Tournament in October

Lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean and they are voracious eaters, potentially devastating to the health of coral reefs. The dive team at St. George's Caye Resort is doing our part to rid the reef of these fast-breeding fish – and many guests who are experienced divers join our dive masters and "spear hunt" underwater! It's exciting and a fun way to control the lionfish population and a unique diving experience you can't find just anywhere. Learn more about Lionfish Dive Safari.

To step up our efforts to control the lionfish population, we are hosting a one-week Lionfish Tournament on October 8-15, 2016. To encourage participation, all tournament dives are half-price!

Divers can bring their own team, or join a team when they arrive. There will be fun prizes for the largest lionfish, smallest lionfish, and the most caught in one day. Come join the fun, help the reef, and maybe win a prize!

10. You need a break from your normal routine

9. You want to help keep the coral reef healthy

8. You want to learn a new skill (our guides will teach you proper techniques for using the spear gun and how to catch these venomous fish safely!)

7. You're planning a last-minute dive trip to Belize and want some adventure in your life

6. You've wanted to try eating this excellent-tasting fish (our kitchen will prepare some of the day's catch!)

5. You are a competitor and you want to win prizes

4. You love to SCUBA dive – any time, any place!

3. Flights to Belize are the most affordable we've seen them. Some guests are getting round-trip tickets from connecting cities for only US$400!

Flying to Belize Keeps Getting Easier (and Cheaper!)

Flying to Belize Keeps Getting Easier (and Cheaper!)

Two more direct flights to Belize City (BZE) from North America have been announced, making it even easier to get to our beautiful Central American country!

The world-class snorkeling and diving on the barrier reef, the Mayan ruins and jungle adventures, and the really friendly native people have all made Belize a popular travel destination over the past few years. Belizeans love showing off their country and the natural beauty, history, culture, food, and adventures.

But for a long time one of the barriers for people getting to Belize was the high cost of airfare. We are thrilled that is less and less of an issue as more airlines add routes to Belize such as Southwest Airlines and West Jet out of Canada!

We are finally seeing affordable airfare to Belize which means it's time for you to come and visit. Right?

Recently Southwest Airlines announced a second direct flight into Belize from the US, this time from Denver International Airport. They plan to start service on a trial basis in spring 2017 and based on demand, they will continue this route. Southwest also offers direct service through Houston Hobby International Airport.

Canadians are about to have their first direct flight from Canada to Belize on West Jet. The new route starts in October of this year, just in time for a fall vacation or winter holiday in the Caribbean!

Many Belize island resorts and jungle resorts have been offering specials to Canadians to help them afford a trip to Belize in 2016 since the Canadian dollar has been so weak. Like the awesome Canada Special Cap'n Ron is offering right now for a stay at St. George's Caye Resort!

Competition, especially from one of the low-price airfare leaders Southwest Airlines, means that all airlines flying into Belize have lowered their fares. Hooray!

It used to cost $800-$1000 roundtrip or more, even in low season. But now we are seeing roundtrip flights from many US cities for only $400! Even the bigger airlines like Delta Airlines and United Airlines now offer relatively cheap flights to Belize thanks to increased competition and increased demand.

And the increased demand makes sense. Look at how beautiful it is here!!

To help with your trip planning here is a list of the airlines that fly into Phillip S. Goldson International Airport in Belize City (BZE) and the connecting cities in North America and South America. Belize travelers from more far-off destinations like the UK, Europe, and Asia will need to connect through one of these airlines.

Is there a difference between an overwater cabana and an over-the-water bungalow?

Is there a difference between an overwater cabana and an over-the-water bungalow?

You’re dreaming about a tropical vacation and you soon find yourself spending hours searching the internet for the perfect little room on the beach. As you explore exotic destinations near and far (Bali! Belize! Hawaii!), drooling over the tropical rooms, some of them over the water, you will no doubt come across a wide array of descriptions, features, and amenities. You will notice that rooms may be called bungalows, cabanas, casitas, huts, etc. – with descriptions such as “private thatch cabana,” “thatch casita,” “romantic beach bungalow,” “over water casita,” “overwater bungalow,” “private cabana over the water,” “rustic beachfront cabana,” and more.

If you are like us, you start wondering, “What is the difference between a cabana and a bungalow? Why all these different terms?”  I just want a quiet, peaceful, relaxing setting on the beach, with a clean room by the water where I can sip my drink, get five-star service, and enjoy some SCUBA diving and snorkeling...

Of course you can go to your dictionary, or ask Siri – and you'll get the basic definition for “bungalow” and “cabana” and “casita.” But the fact is there is no one definition for these rooms and no one enforcing rules on what resorts call their rooms! Even identically appointed rooms at two different resorts can be called a cabana by one place, and called bungalow by another.

But the good news is: you don’t need to worry about it!

It’s not what the room is called that matters, but whether the features and the amenities fit what you want:

  • Do you want to stay in a regular hotel room, or something exotic and different?
  • Do you need air conditioning? TV? Room service? What other amenities are important?
  • Do you want to be on the beach, or are you looking for the “over the water” experience?
  • Do you want to be on a private island, or in a touristy area with beach bars?

As you explore your options (here is a great site:, look at the pictures, read room descriptions thoroughly, and it can even a good idea to contact the resort and ask them to confirm that the pictures on their website are current and accurately portray the condition of the rooms now, especially if you will be visiting a remote location that is less regulated.

If this is the first time you’ve traveled outside of the US, be prepared for the rooms to be a little different! The style, charm, and local aspects of the room will be a welcome change from the more sterile environment in which most North Americans live.

For example, the 12 cabanas (or bungalows, or casitas!) at St. George’s Caye Resort are far more than a place to sleep—each private cabana is like a work of art built by local staff using beautiful native hardwoods and featuring authentic thatch roofs, handmade curtains, and local artwork. Your bungalow also has a covered front porch (with handmade hammock!) where your coffee and fresh squeezed juice will be delivered each morning at sunrise.

We describe our cabanas as “rustic elegance” because they combine high-end amenities with a beach-hut experience. The en suite bathroom has Turkish towels, bathrobes, and a heated shower that is small and efficient (we filter all of our own water on the island), and the air conditioning works well combined with ceiling and floor fans to keep you cool, but not like it would in a standard hotel room (our rooms do not have insulation or drywall). The rooms do not have televisions or phones, and internet is only found in the main lodge/bar (time to unplug!). For most people this is exactly what they want—a true tropical experience with thatch ambience and ocean breezes.

Check out our photo gallery to see more of our cabanas.

Belize offers the shortest travel time to over-water bungalows from the US (just over 2 hours from Texas airports!) and for a much lower price tag than many of the resorts in Tahiti, Bora Bora, and the South Pacific.

So whether you are planning a romantic honeymoon, an anniversary trip, a SCUBA diving adventure, a family reunion or holiday, or just getting away with friends, if you want a thatch bungalow at a private island resort in Belize, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.! (And remember, we include your airport transfers at no additional charge making travel even quicker and easier!)

Some of the Best Activities in Belize are Free (for our Guests!)

Some of the Best Activities in Belize are Free (for our Guests!)

When planning a trip to Belize, guests often ask about the best available activities, both in the ocean exploring the Belize Barrier Reef and on the mainland exploring the jungles.

"I’ve got only 7 days, how much can I fit in?"

The answers is: a lot! Especially with our island's convenient location only 7 miles from Belize City and less than a mile from the Belize Barrier Reef - making both ocean and jungle adventures very easily accessible.

"What can I do that I’ve never done before? Can I learn to do something new, like sailing, snorkeling, or kayaking?"

Belize offers a variety of adventures from zip-lining through the jungle canopy and cave-tubing down a river, to ocean activities like diving, snorkeling, and sailing. At our resort there are many opportunities to learn a new hobby or try something new - our local guides and friendly staff are here to help!

"How can I stretch my vacation dollar? Do you offer any FREE activities?"

If you're like most visitors to Belize, you want to squeeze in as much fun as possible (you can rest when you get home, right?). As you plan out your vacation budget, keep in mind that at St. George's Caye Resort we include many free water activities to make sure you get the most out of your time in Belize. Read on to learn more!

Reflecting on our own experiences with vacations, when we planned what we would offer at St. George’s Caye we wanted to include a mix of free activities and premium tours. We knew many people would happily pay for valet SCUBA diving on the Belize Barrier Reef and the famous Blue Hole, guided excursions to the jungle to learn about Mayan ruins and culture, and to visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

But we also knew guests would have lots of "down time" on the island - maybe a free afternoon after diving in the morning, or a day to unwind without a planned activity - and many need to be mindful of their vacation budget, even if they want to do it all.

So that's why we provide a variety of complimentary water sports equipment and fun things to do that won’t cost you anything and let you experience the best of a Belize island resort...

We have a number of kayaks, both single and tandem (sure, your partner will paddle and let you sit back and enjoy!). View mangroves with a variety of sea birds, dolphins and manatees (yes, our guests see these incredible animals on a regular basis), southern rays, spotted eagle rays, lobster, etc.

The leeward (calm) side of our island is a large bay surrounded by mature mangroves. The water is generally about 2 to 4 feet deep, so no worries if you fall (or decide to take a refreshing dip in the ocean). This is great exercise, good for core strength, and totally fun!

You can use our snorkel gear any time and see a variety of sea life around our docks, or right off the leeward beach. We also provide guided snorkel trips over the coral reef, just a few minutes from St. George’s Caye, for a fee. This is well worth it because the reef is where you will see the most wildlife and colorful fish, and your guide will point things out that you could easily miss. BUT, you don’t have to pay to snorkel if you don't want to.

We have had some of the most dedicated and well-traveled windsurfers visit us at St. George’s Caye and tell us that there is no place in the world where the conditions for windsurfing exceed what we have right in front of the caye! Glide and fly over the sparkling water alongside the Belize Barrier Reef – a magic carpet ride on water.

We have three Hobie Cat sailing vessels for complimentary guest use. Experienced sailors visit nearby islands when the winds are good (about 98% of the time), and guests who do not know how to sail are surprised to find that our staff will take them out, teach them the basics, and that they can then go out on their own right away.

Sparkling, clear, refreshing, warm enough to walk right in, long enough to swim laps, never crowded, pop-up water volleyball, lounge chairs poolside, sunning deck, shaded area with hammocks – need we say more?

We offer a no-risk program for guests to try scuba diving in our pool with a dive instructor. Get a safety briefing on the equipment and then try breathing underwater and learn a few basic diving safety procedures. Love it? Head on out to the reef for a Resort Dive down to 30 feet - or sign up to get Open Water Dive Certified!

Bocce ball, bar games, crab races, shell finding, magic tricks (when Leo is bartending!), card games, board games, and lots of hammock time, reading time, and time to get lost in the moment.

So please, come down and dive with dolphins and sea turtles, hunt some lion fish with us, go to the jungle with the best tour guides - but make sure you also plan to fill many hours with free use of our non-motorized water sports equipment and relaxing around the island. Kayaking, diving, and snorkeling offer some of the best ways to see the beauty of Belize. See you in paradise!

Making It Easier for Canadians to Visit Belize in 2016

Making It Easier for Canadians to Visit Belize in 2016

As a fellow commonwealth nation, we see a lot of Canadians in Belize, both as tourists and as ex-pats who've made Belize their new home. Especially in the winter months, known as "high season" in Belize, we tend to have many Canadian visitors seeking sunshine, warm waters, and world-class scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing on the Belize Barrier Reef.

But ever since the decline of the Canadian dollar, we've had fewer and fewer Canadian guests. And this makes us sad. We love friendly Canadians!

So, to help more Canadians afford a 2016 trip to Belize, Cap'n Ron has rolled out a new special offer for Canadians only!

For trips now through December 17th you get full value for your Canadian dollar. That means your room rate is in Canadian dollars instead of US dollars, saving you 20%, 30%, or more on a private thatch cabana in paradise! You can choose from Overwater bungalows on the sunset side, beachfront cabanas on the sunrise side, or a garden cabana nestled in the center of the resort.

Interested in an all-inclusive resort package? You can get the special room rate in Canadian dollars combined with any of the Adventure, Dive, Romance, or Relaxation Packages we offer.

Combine this great room rate with the incredibly affordable airfares to Belize City from many North American cities, and your dream trip to Belize in 2016 could become a reality!

Visit Mayan ruins in the jungle, dive the Blue Hole and other epic dive sites in Belize, float on inner tubes down a jungle river through caves (called cave tubing), or simply relax on our secluded island, napping in hammocks, taking a dip in the saline pool, or getting a massage in the Island Spa.

Learn more about our special rates for Canadians on the Special Offers page of our website.

We hope to see you in paradise soon!

Recently we've had guests ask, "Why do you offer a Teacher Bonus?"

So here is Cap'n Ron to elaborate on why education is so important to him and St. George's Caye Resort.

The value of a good education is universally acknowledged in the western world – opportunity for better jobs, ability to make better life decisions, more awareness of the world, more understanding of and compassion for others, etc. Sometimes, however, people who are fortunate enough to have access to quality education take it for granted. We sometimes don’t see, or we forget that a significant number of people don’t have this advantage.

I ask myself, “What if the next Jonas Salk, Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein or Nelson Mandela never has the chance to achieve anything because she or he did not have the opportunity for education?” Our world is so much the poorer for not having met the great achievers, the great potential contributors who do not get to blossom due to a lack of educational opportunity.

Students Must Pay to Attend High School in Belize

In the United States, Canada and Western Europe, education is considered a right and governments take responsibility for making education available. In Belize, education is provided for everyone through the elementary level only. Beyond elementary, there is a cost – for tuition, books, uniforms, as well as transportation and meals – that is beyond the reach of a significant percentage of the population. The result is that thousands of young people never get the chance to attend middle school, high school and beyond. Statisticians will tell us that there are great achievers in that group of uneducated people who just didn’t have the opportunity.

Scholarship Program at St. George's Caye Resort

As a successful private island resort, St. George’s is dedicated to helping identify the achievers and supporting their education – hoping to see more young people achieve their potential. Our staff not only takes pride in showing guests the Blue Hole, Mayan ruins and other jungle adventures, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and other Belize landmarks, but they also fund and operate a scholarship program, currently putting six students through school in Belize.

Learn more about our Scholarships for Higher Education in Belize

Your Stay at St. George's Helps Us Support Students

Guests at St. George’s choose between an overwater bungalow (sometimes called an over-water casita) or a private oceanfront bungalow (beachfront thatch ambience!) or a cozy garden cabana. You might come to learn to dive in Belize, experience adventure travel in Belize, or come for an anniversary trip. Whatever you choose to do, with our all-inclusive packages and excellent Belize resort deals, our guests get the extra benefit of supporting the education of young people.

Educators get extra special treatment at St. George’s. Our summer program last year with huge discounts was very popular with teachers, and this year we are offering a $100 Resort Credit to educators (and students!) over and above our sizzling Summer Specials. That means you can get a free jungle tour for two AND a $100 credit to spend on a massage or guided snorkel to the Belize Barrier Reef.

So tell the teachers and educators in your life that they deserve a relaxing summer break in Belize - and to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for their free Teacher Bonus.

Thank you to our guests for helping us find and support the undiscovered great achievers!

So many fun adventures. Right now for visits before September 15th we’re offering a Free Jungle Tour for two. Choose from a guided trip to explore the Lamanai Mayan Temple and Ruins or spend a day in the jungle for zip-line and cave tubing. Or one person can get certified to scuba dive for free!

There are plenty of fun adventures to go around with free unlimited use of kayaks, snorkel gear, Hobie Cat sailboats, windsurf boards, and standup paddle-boards.  And by reserving one of the Adventure Packages or Dive Packages, it includes everything for a wonderful vacation in Belize: airport greeting and transfers, private thatch bungalow on the beach or over the water, all meals, and select adventure-filled tours or diving.

This is the best time to send your graduate to Belize (and for you to visit) because we are seeing the lowest air fares from the U.S. to Belize in over 15 years. Blues 'n Belize: How It Got Started on Our Little Island

Blues 'n Belize: How It Got Started on Our Little Island

Cap’n Ron, owner of St. George’s Caye Resort, is a music lover and has hosted musicians for house concerts on a number of occasions at his home in Portland, Oregon.  Resort manager Barry is a huge fan of Blues music and spent part of his career (before moving to Belize to manage St. George’s!) working with Grammy-award-winning Blues pianist Pinetop Perkins.

Both Cap'n Ron and Barry felt our private island resort offered a unique and intimate atmosphere for live acoustic music, so after reaching out to some industry connections, we hosted our first Blues 'n Belize with Doug MacLeod and Phil Wiggins in November 2015.  (Read more about the inaugural event: Blues in Belize :: A Private Island Blues Experience)

“My heart was full the entire week, full with the wonderful music of Phil and Doug and their generous teacher spirit, full with the beauty of St. George's Caye, full with the welcoming spirit of the staff and guests, with the other-world beauty of the reef. I must add that my stomach was full with the delicious meals prepared by Ernesto. I believe that we all felt the magic at some point during that special week.”
– Marc P., guest at Blues ‘n Belize 2015

We had so much fun

we just have to do it again,

and again!

Cap’n Ron is excited to announce our next Blues 'n Belize with
five-time Blues Music Award nominee Fiona Boyes.

At Blues ‘n Belize you get a tropical vacation with superior amenities AND the incredible experience of private “house concerts” with world-class musicians.

Spend your days lounging around our island paradise, enjoying complimentary watersports like kayaking, standup paddle boards, sailing, and swimming. Get a massage in the island spa or join our guides for snorkeling and diving on the Belize Barrier Reef, only a few minutes away by boat. Or take guided tours to the mainland to zip-line, cave-tube, or explore Mayan ruins in the jungle.

No matter how you fill your days, you’ll spend your evenings with a small group of interesting people (new friends!) from around the world – enjoying a delicious dinner on the oceanfront dining porch, then listening to live Blues music with a Belikin beer in your hand (or a drink with an umbrella, if you prefer).

Doesn't get much better than that, does it?!

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We only have room for 25-30 guests for this incredible week of music in May. (But stay tuned -- more artists joining us later in 2016!)

How to Get an Extra Day of Vacation in Belize

How to Get an Extra Day of Vacation in Belize

If you're like me, when you travel, you want to get in as much FUN time as you can. The actual travel part - the planes, trains, and automobiles - can be fun but it's not FUN fun. Especially when you're heading to a secluded island paradise and you want to get on the beach as soon as possible

When planning how to get the most island time possible for your Belize vacation, it's important to take into account the location of the island and the transfer times required after you arrive in Belize.

  • How many hours will it take you to get there and back?
  • Do you need to take a plane and then a boat?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Does the resort offer transportation?

Most of the private island resorts in Belize are in the southern part of the country, which means another flight once you land in Belize City and go through customs and immigration. Most flights are less than 45 minutes, but you will wait up to an hour or two before boarding your local flight. Then you'll likely have a van ride and then finally a 45-60 minute boat ride to the island resort. It can be worth it if you have the extra time as the cayes (pronounced keys) off the coast of Belize are pretty breathtaking!

By far the most popular option for Belize travelers is a visit to the largest island, Ambergris Caye. More easily accessible than the outer atolls and southern cayes, Ambergris offers a wide variety of lodging options, from small hostels and hotels to large luxury resorts located several miles north and south of the main town of San Pedro. To get there you either fly from Belize International to San Pedro (about $300 USD per couple round trip), or if you arrive early enough in the day you can take a public water taxi from Belize City, a 75-minute ride to the San Pedro terminal. Once in San Pedro, most resorts include pickup and return to the airport or water taxi, which can take anywhere from 5-10 minutes by car or golf cart to 45 minutes by boat, depending on where your resort is located.

So, how do you get the most beach time on your Belize vacation?

You stay at St. George's Caye Resort, of course! Our island resort is centrally located only 7 miles off the coast of Belize City making for quick and easy travel to and from the mainland. Only 20 minutes in fact. On a private boat. And then you're greeted with cool towels, tropical punch, and a friendly Belizean smile.

From the time you exit customs at the Belize City Airport until you're sitting on the porch of your private cabana with a cool drink staring at the Caribbean is usually less than an hour – and it won’t cost you a penny!

Compared to the 3 or 4 hours or more that it can take to get to other island resorts - both coming and going - when you stay at St. George's, you get an extra day of vacation. And who doesn't want that?!

Exciting News: Adventure Tours Now More Affordable!

Exciting News: Adventure Tours Now More Affordable!

Popular excursions like Cave Tubing, Zip Lining and exploring the ancient Mayan temples are thoroughly enjoyed by our guests, and to many visitors are a “must-do” while in Belize. And we can't blame them -- they're a lot of fun! Many of our packages include one or more of these popular Belize Adventures

Excursions to these popular jungle sites are provided in a number of ways by tour operators: 1) Some operators function only on the mainland and provide services at bare-minimum standards; 2) Some tour operators use busses and take 20, 30 or more people at a time; 3) And then there is the St. George’s Caye Experience -- We not only provide boat transfers as part of our tours; we take only small groups from the resort and our top-notch professional guides give personalized tours during which everyone can hear the information.

Our premium service costs a bit more and that has been mentioned several times in online reviews. Although we will not diminish the quality of our tour experience in order to offer the cheapest prices, we are sensitive to how much a vacation can cost, and so we are always seeking ways to reduce costs and pass the savings on to our guests.

Cap'n Ron has just reduced the prices for our most popular tours -- by over 20% when we have 4 or more guests participating!

We hope this makes it so that even more of our guests can enjoy mainland adventure tours and make unforgettable memories in Belize.

Meet Carlos!

Meet Carlos!

In a time when our world often seems continuously chaotic, unfair, mean and full of bad news - I'd like to offer you some hope and faith in humanity.

Specifically, I’d like to introduce you to Carlos Reyes and his family. If they don't give you a glimmer of hope for humans - I don't know what will! :) Meet St. George's Caye Resort Team Leader, Carlos Reyes. A 20 year veteran of Caye living Carlos knows every square inch of St. George's and is an integral part of the Resort's success. Behind the scenes he is often unseen and unheard - but we cannot function without him!

At four years old Carlos was brought to Belize by his parents from civil war torn El Salvador. They were immigrants fleeing a less than ideal situation in their home country. Actually it was a scary place full of violence, gun fights and fear. Sound like a familiar recent story you might have heard on the news? Well, it is not too far off.

With not much other than their family and a few backpacks Carlos, his three brothers and sisters and parents were offered hope in a community named Valley of Peace; a village in Belize set up just for El Salvadorian immigrants. His family knew how to farm and live off the land and pretty much do any job they could to make a living. His parents went on to have seven more children - thriving in a peaceful, humble atmosphere.

Carlos went to school, learned everything his parents could teach him, and eventually at the age of 17 landed a job out on St. George's Caye. He has been here for 20 years! Anyone who frequents St. George's Caye knows Carlos. He helped build your Cabanas, pool, docks and knows every square inch or plumbing and wiring. He can fix almost anything. He's like a magician on this island.

Carlos is the proud father of 5 children. The oldest two boys are studying abroad in Mexico and his oldest daughter Jessica will finish High school this year and will likely follow in their footsteps. Rony attends elementary school in Belize City, and the smallest little Reyes is just 18 months old! She can be found toddling around St. George's Caye, just like all her siblings did as babies. All of Carlos and Maria's children have grown up spending much of their time on the Caye. They also have a home in Valley of Peace where they raise cattle, but most of their time is spent here on little St. George's Caye.

Carlos with SGCR Scholarship Committee & Recipients & their Families

In addition to being one of our Senior team members Carlos is also head of our Scholarship Committee. He is very active in choosing scholarship students, communicating with teachers, purchasing books for and keeping up with student progress. He is truly a pillar of his community!

Many guests of St. George's Caye Resort do not have a chance to meet Mr. Reyes. He is usually busy - and you won't find him lying around on the beach chairs. (Although no one would deny him time to relax and unwind on the chairs he built and the beach he rakes!) But if you do have the privilege of meeting Carlos Reyes - you won't be disappointed. Simply say hello or ask him about our Resort - he's a walking book of history and knowledge of everything St. George's!

Scholarships for Higher Education in Belize

Scholarships for Higher Education in Belize

Scholarships for Belize Higher Education

One of the ways we show our gratitude and reinvest in Belize is through educational scholarships for students who would not be able to attend school otherwise.

In 2013-14 we sponsored one young lady - paying her school tuition, books, transportation and food - allowing her to attend high school. Many students in Belize stop attending school in 6th form (or 8th grade) because high school fees and books are often too expensive for families to afford. All money to support her was given by the staff of St. George's and matched in donations by the management and owner.

Read first year scholarship recipients letter thanking staff.

In 2014-15 the staff donated enough money out of their own pockets to sponsor FOUR students! This is very exciting! It touched the staff members to see how the seemingly small pieces of their paycheck added up in a way that could change the lives of children from their villages.

This school year, 2015-2016 we are thrilled to let you know that SIX students are now being supported by our scholarship program. Over $14,000 Belize dollars was contributed - every member of our staff chose to participate! These 6 students are all currently enrolled in school, learning and thriving. How fabulous is that! It may seem like a small number - but imagine how these six students lives are being changed by the opportunity to go to school instead of having to enter the workforce at the ages of 12 and 13.

As a reward for our scholarship recipients, on August 23 Cap'n Ron and the staff hosted the four students and their families for a day on the island. For some this was their first time seeing the ocean. In addition to a nice meal on the beach under the almond tree, there was time to kayak around the island and visit the small St. George's Caye Aquarium. It was a memorable and eye opening experience for the students and their families.

All scholarship recipients are chosen by our staff's elected Scholarship Committee - a small group of seasoned team members. They communicate with school principals, parents and are aware of needs within their communities. The selection process considers need, attendance and grades before choosing. Unfortunately some students are left out.

Why are we sharing this with you?

When you stay at St. George's Caye Resort we want you to know you are not only experiencing a beautiful vacation on a private island - you are also supporting many local families. It is because of you, our guests, that these programs are possible! It also empowers our staff to do the best job they can serving you - knowing the cycle of giving will flow through them. They pass on their enthusiasm and authentic desire to create a great vacation to you AND they get to pass on some of their financial reward to others in need. And we wanted you to know!

Thank you!

Its costs roughly $1500 US dollars ($3000 Belize Dollars) to completely sponsor a student - covering tuition, books, transportation, uniforms and food - if the belly isn't full the mind isn't active! If you would like to directly help us sponsor more children please let us know! Contact Cap'n Ron at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Flying to Belize

Flying to Belize

Many people ask about flights to Belize. What's the best route to take? Who has the best prices? When do flights arrive and depart?

So we've put together the 411 on getting to Belize by air this Fall 2015 and into 2016.

Belize will have a whopping 66 flights per week coming from the United States.

The four major airlines offering daily service from the United States into Belize are American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, and soon Southwest Airlines. Tropic Air, Copa, and Avianca/Taca will get you here from Mexico, Panama and other Central American Countries.

By March 2016, Belize will have 528 international nonstop flights per month from 16 foreign airports and 7 airlines including the newest ones Copa Airlines and Southwest Airlines!  - Via Tropic Air Facebook Page

Southwest is currently taking the cake on best fares. Beginning October 15th, 2015 Southwest Airlines will begin DAILY flights direct from Houston's HOBBY airport. The HOU to BZE flight will take off at 1:45pm and land in Belize at 3:05pm .The returning flight from BZE to HOU will depart Belize at 5:40pm and land in Houston at 8:15pm.

If you've never flown Southwest before - you might find them to be quite refreshing. They are known for a few key differences:

  1. Two 50 pound bags fly free with you. FREE. And you still get a carry-on.
  2. No assigned seats. They assign boarding numbers in three groups, A, B, & C and you line up and board accordingly and take the first available seat that appeals to you. You can pay more to board earlier. They do let families with children board after all of group A has boarded. And they will assist you if you cannot find a place next to your child.
  3. No fees to change your flight. NO FEES. You will pay fare differences, but no fees just because you want or need to change your flight. (United for example charges $200 + fare differences)

United is price matching the fares from Houston to Belize, though they operate out of IAH in Houston.

United - Houston to Belize

Southwest - Houston to Belize

There are more flights than ever landing daily at Belize's  Philip Goldson International Airport and that means more seats for the airlines to fill. Which ultimately turns out to be a good deal for you!

Pro Tip: Set flight notifications to email you when fares drop!

Meet Leonel!

Meet Leonel!

Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

                                                Andy Warhol

Leonel is like a breath of fresh air. He embodies the Belizean spirit. His smile is contagious and you can't help but want to take him home with you. Because Leonel  sees the beauty. He sees the beauty in people. And he sees the beauty in art. St George's Caye isn't complete without Leo's beautiful outlook.

When you arrive to St. George's Caye Resort Leo is one of the first team members you'll meet. You will mostly find him mixing your favorite cocktails and making sure your beer is ice cold. But Leo also loves to entertain. He's full of fun card tricks and bar games that will leave you scratching you're head. But don't ask him how he does it - because he won't tell. Sworn to secrecy by a fellow magician Leo takes his oath seriously and won't share the tricks of the trade.

Leonel knows how we do just about everything here at St. George's Caye. And can help you find you way around, grab you a fresh coconut drink or help you book your tours and diving.

But when Leo is not using his talents to create amazing vacations for our guests - he uses his time to make art. Beautiful art. Check out some of his latest paintings. They go fast so hurry on down to Belize to grab a unique piece of art. Aren't these amazing!?

Before painting, Leo was an artist designing and creating tattoos and t-shirts for special occasions. He was recently in Belize City at the annual tattoo expo sharing his love for art with others.

Like many of our team members Leonel was born and raised in Valley of Peace, Cayo District in Belize. His father is a farmer like many Valley residents - as the area is ripe for healthy crops and cattle - and his mother is a chef at a local restaurant. Leo has a brother David, who is a team member in the kitchen and younger sister who is continuing her education.

Come see the beauty Leonel sees everyday at St George's Caye Resort. His beautiful spirit is essential to a care-free vacation in Belize.

Check out our latest special here! Cheers!

Beach BBQ

Beach BBQ

It has been our Saturday tradition for the last five years. A favorite of many guests. Actually it's our favorite too. There's just something cool about eating under the moon and starts while watching fire burn.

Beach BBQ

While our dinners are normally served over four courses in the dining room - Saturday nights break the mold. Late afternoon you'll notice the guys gathering chairs and placing them in a semi-circle on the

The grills come out form hiding. The fire wood is placed. And the magic begins.

You'll smell it before its ready. Like mom's home cooking you want just a taste - a peek - a pinch before its ready to be served. If you ask nicely, Ernesto may just give you one.

Beach BBQ is served buffet style. And there is plenty if you want seconds! Grab a plate and choose between the weeks local meat choices, fresh veggies, beans, fresh baked bread and more! Make sure to save room for dessert.

And one weekend a month - when the moon is full - it rises at just the perfect time. The sun has set, the fire is burning - and the beautiful full moon begins to rise. Making Beach BBQ even more awesome.
