Private Suites in the Villa – A New Oceanfront Experience at St. George’s!

SGCR-Villa_oceanfront-veranda-with-porch-swing

Located between the swimming pool and the Oceanfront Cabanas, The Villa features three private suites adjoining a large living room and veranda with expansive views of the Caribbean. Until now this space was used by the owner, and for occasional overflow and groups needing more than our 12 thatch cabanas.

But we can no longer keep this beautiful space and impressive view to ourselves…so we’re excited to announce the newly remodeled oceanfront villa and suites at St. George’s Caye Resort!

RENT A PRIVATE SUITE – OR THE ENTIRE VILLA

Starting this winter, each of the three air-conditioned suites – the Coral Suite, Dolphin Suite, and Captain’s Suite – is available to rent as a private room, or you can rent the entire Villa. With gorgeous Belizean hardwood floors, bright tropical accents, and sweeping ocean views from the living room and veranda, The Villa is the perfect space for a group of friends, two or three couples, or family to enjoy our island paradise together.

Just like the private cabanas, your private villa suite comes with coffee & fresh juice delivered each morning, your first rum punch on the house every day, unlimited use of kayaks, SUPs, sailboats, windsurf gear, and saline swimming pool, and all other resort amenities.

Let's go on a photo tour!

The jaw-dropping photo at the top of this post was taken at a wedding earlier this year by Conch Creative, a local Belize photography company that does amazing work. The clouds created a dramatic backdrop that looks like a movie set. Wow!

3 of Our Favorite Honeymoon Photos:

2 More Awesome Wedding Photos

This photo was taken at sunset right after the couple said, "I do." So romantic!

And finally, our all-time favorite, nicknamed "The Rainbow Wedding" because the rainbow appeared right after the couple exchanged vows. (We wish we could order the weather to do that, but what a fine coincidence in timing!)

We hope you enjoyed gazing at these beautiful photos of Belize weddings and honeymoons on our island. You can find even more photos in our website gallery and on Facebook and Instagram

How Low Can They Go? Roundup of the Lowest Airfares to Belize

Transfers included!

As a resort in Belize, we keep our eye on flight prices because we know how much this affects whether someone can travel to our beautiful island in the Caribbean. There are several airlines that serve Belize: American, Avianca, Copa, Delta, Southwest, and United. Airfares are getting more and more competitive thanks to the arrival of Southwest Airlines in 2015, especially during May through November.

Guests who recently booked with us mentioned getting airfares as low as $200 and $300 round-trip through Southwest Airlines. This is an incredible deal! Especially compared to the more standard fares to Belize in the $500-$800 range.

SHOW ME THE LOW AIRFARES

We had to see it for ourselves so we searched on the Southwest site for dates that overlap with our “Choose Your Discount Summer Special” (good through Sept 30th) and found:

  • Roundtrip from Houston = $368.06
  • Roundtrip from Denver = $370.66
  • Roundtrip from Ft. Lauderdale = $188.06

Yes, you read that correctly. Round-trip from Florida to Belize for less than $200!

Talk about an affordable summer escape…what are you waiting for?!

As further inspiration, here are screen captures from the searches conducted on June 27, 2017 for travel dates in August) --

GET TO THE AIRPORT,
WE’LL TAKE CARE OF THE REST

If you combine these incredibly low airfares with some of the great summer specials available, you can design the perfect summer vacation in Belize. Once you arrive at Belize International Airport (BZE), we take care of the rest. A friendly member of our staff greets you and drives you to the marina where you’ll take a 20-minute boat ride to our private residence island. It’s only 7 miles off the coast, but worlds away. We’ll return you to the airport when it’s time to go home, but we know you won’t want to leave.

We're Blushing! 2017 Experts' Choice Award and Best of Belize

Aerial Views of St George's Caye Resort Belize

First things first, a huge congratulations to our amazing team who makes this all possible. Without our staff, our resort would just be another resort. But with them - St. George's Caye is magic! And we love it when others agree.

Our little island resort in Belize was just recognized by the travel website TripExpert with a 2017 Experts' Choice Award and distinction as one of the Best of Belize. As their press release states, "Travelers can be confident that it is an outstanding choice for lodging in Belize."

We couldn't agree more!

St. George's Caye Resort Reviews

 St. George's Caye Resort Reviews

What The Experts Say

These awards are based on endorsements by travel experts in both The Telegraph and Travel + Leisure magazine. Less than 2% of all hotels worldwide receive the honor. As the review in The Telegraph states, "This adults-only beachfront resort is the only place to stay and dine on this traffic-free, mile-long island close to the Belize Barrier Reef."

You can read the reviews here on our profile page on the TripExpert website. Then get in touch with Cap'n Ron to plan your visit and see what all the fuss is about! You deserve some R&R on a secluded island in the Caribbean.

Smaller is Better: Benefits of Private Tours in Belize

Belize-Cave-Tubing-1

When people visit our island resort in Belize, some folks just want to lay on the beach or by the pool all day. And that is fine with us! On our island, "doing nothing" is an activity.

For the more active and adventuresome guests, St. George's offers amazing off-island tours and activities to explore other parts of Belize. These tours are guided and private for our guests only (small groups of 2-10 usually), giving you a personalized experience as you uncover the wonders of this beautiful and friendly country. When driving is required, you'll be in a small passenger van rather than a large bus and you'll always be able to hear your guide and ask questions.

Best Tours in Belize

Some of the most popular tours we offer include:

  • Lamanai Maya temple and ruins with jungle boat ride and wildlife viewing
  • San Pedro Slam - go snorkeling or diving at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and visit the restaurants, shops, and beach bars on "La Isla Bonita"
  • Cave Tubing & Zip-line - float down a jungle river and through caves, equipped with a headlamp; then whiz through the jungle canopy on a zip-line

To provide our guests with a premier experience, we proudly have a licensed professional tour guide on staff, Cornel Staine. Knowledgeable, personable, and a great story teller, Cornel leads most of our small tours (for resort guests only!). When Cornel is not available, he schedules our guests' tours with a few select guides whom we know and trust. Cornel also meets most of our guests when they arrive at the airport and is a wealth of information as he drives you to the marina for your short boat ride to the resort. You can learn more about Cornel here.

Avoiding Crowds

Once on the island, the office staff, Jahnene and Oliver, will be work with you to schedule your tours, diving, spa treatments, and other activities so you get the most out of your time with us. You can pre-arrange tours when you reserve your stay, or wait and add activities when you are at the resort.

So that our guests get the best possible experience, we have a suggested weekly schedule for the off-island tours. Certain trips, like the guided tour of Lamanai and the fun-filled Cave Tubing & Zip-Line, are only offered on certain days when there are the fewer crowds.

Everything Included

Since St. George's Caye is conveniently located only 7 miles off the shore of Belize City, your travel time back and forth for mainland tours is only about 20 minutes by private boat. Tours include all of your transportation once on the mainland, and your lunch and bottled water is provided too! Most tours leave the island between 7am and 8am (with breakfast provided) and return between 4pm and 5pm, with plenty of time to freshen up before dinner on the oceanfront dining porch.

Private, personalized tours are just one of the many reasons it's great to stay at a small island resort with limited guests. You also get your choice of beach and pool chairs!

Watch Stars & Meteor Showers from a Secluded Caribbean Island

Watch Stars & Meteor Showers from a Secluded Caribbean Island

A favorite nighttime activity on our little island in the Caribbean is stargazing.

Since we’re more than 7 miles from the mainland of Belize and there are no towns or other island resorts nearby, there is very little "light pollution" to get in the way of your star show. Identify the constellations, find a planet, gaze at shooting stars. The show is especially engaging on evenings with a new moon or very little moonlight.

Want a front row seat to a meteor shower?

Plan your Belize trip to coincide with meteor showers and low moonlight – and find a place with very little ambient light for the best star viewing, like St. George’s Caye.

Meteor showers are especially fantastic from our secluded Belize island resort. Choose a lounge chair on the beach, grab a Belikin or fruity rum drink, and lay back for a wonderful show.

Mark your calendars! We can’t wait for meteor showers that coincide with low moonlight: July 30th, Oct 22nd, and Nov 18th.

Here is a helpful calendar of meteor showers in 2017: http://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-s…/2017-meteor-shower-list/

Staff Scholarship Fund Grows to Support 12 Students in Belize

Staff Scholarship Fund Grows to Support 12 Students in Belize

As we move towards completion of our 4th year of providing student scholarships in Belize, we are pleased to provide you, our friends, with this update. As you may know, education is not free to students and their families in Belize as it is in the U.S., Canada and many other nations. Many children living in poverty are not able to get even a basic education.

In 2013 the staff of St. George's Caye Resort came together to start a scholarship fund to help children in their home villages attend school. In August 2014 we proudly shared about the Successful First Year for St. George’s Scholarship Winner, and then a year later shared that the program had expanded to help 6 students for the 2015-2016 school year!  Read more: Scholarships for Higher Education in Belize

MEET THE STUDENTS WE SUPPORT

We are thrilled to share that we now support 11 high school students and one elementary age student through our program, which is fully operated by our incredible staff.  All candidates were vetted for ability, motivation and need – and they are now very thankful for their educational opportunity.

Here is a little bit about the twelve students we currently support:

  • Justin’s mother fights to prevent him from following in his father footsteps.  She has tried to get enough money to pay for tuition by selling tamales house by house.
  • Christian's mother has been working hard on agriculture and was able to provide Primary education but was unable to meet the higher cost of Secondary school.
  • Roshanny is daughter of a single mother of four who tries her best on providing education for them.  Roshanny was awarded the student of the year for being well-mannered, well behaved and dedicated to her studies. She would like to be a nurse in the future.
  • Jairo is the son of a farmer who cannot provide education for him. Jairo has left an impressive legacy of hard work, dedication toward his studies at the institution where he attended primary school. Parents are supportive for his education but are not able to provide it.
  • Emily is outstanding, dedicated, hardworking, respectful and always willing to help others. Emily is a daughter of single mother and sister of six. Mother is not able to provide high school education for her.
  • Jackelin's mother works selling bread on the streets, and her father is sick and unemployed with two children in High School.  Jackelin’s mother is requesting our assistance to be able to provide a good education for her daughter.
  • Reginaldo is the son of a farmer who is trying to provide education for three of his sons, they are currently attending High school in Belmopan where they need to travel every day.
  • Gladis's parents are farmers and can’t provide for fees. It’s been over a year since Gladis had to drop out of school due to lack of funds. She has been trying to find a job to get the funds but because of her young age she has not succeeded.
  • Nathaly is an 11 year old with parents from El Salvador. With the help of St. George’s Caye Resort’s Staff Nathaly had been successfully promoted to STD 6 (6th grade) in the current primary school where she is enrolled.
  • Austin had given up the hopes on continue studying, but with the recommendation of his teachers and Principal of the school where he successfully completed primary education, he was awarded our scholarship and continues his education.
  • Amilcar is the son of local farmer who was not able to provide higher education. The scholarship program got to him by recommendation of some of his past teachers and principal. Amilcar has successfully been promoted to attend his third year of high school.
  • Brian is the son of a single mother, and amongst the highest students in his class who was not able to get financial help to continue his education. Brian is attending his second year in Belmopan Comprehensive School.

MAKING AN IMPACT TOGETHER

St. George’s Caye scholarships are funded by the staff and the resort.  Although we do not solicit donations, our guests and friends are welcome to help us expand our support of students by donating.

Stay tuned for further updates – who knows, maybe one day we will be telling you about the next medical breakthrough, humanitarian achievement or celebrated novel by our past scholars!

What's New for 2017 at St. George's Caye Resort

What's New for 2017 at St. George's Caye Resort

Our secluded island paradise is pretty much perfect for relaxing and adventuring -- located only 7 miles off the coast of Belize and less than a mile from the reef, St. George's Caye offers great access to both ocean and jungle adventures. There are only 12 thatch cabanas and a limited number of guests at one time (and no TVs or cars!), so you can truly get away from it all. And our staff is one of the finest in the country, providing top-notch friendly service without being intrusive.

But we're always looking for ways to improve the guest experience and make your time in Belize even better. We listen to guest feedback at the resort, via TripAdvisor reviews, and through post-stay guest surveys -- and we’ve made a few fun updates so that you have an even more incredible time at our island resort in Belize.

Better Beach Area, New Bar Menu & More

This past fall our team rehabbed our beach to prevent further erosion and make it even better for our guests. We've added a ramp and stairs to make it easier to launch the Hobie Cat sailboats, and the sand is dotted with pink chairs and colorful hammocks for reading, napping, and sunbathing. The four Oceanfront Cabanas face this beautiful stretch of beach and offer front-row seats for the sunrise each morning.

Earlier in 2016 we added stand-up paddle-boards for guests to use free of charge as much as they like. In addition to unlimited use of kayaks, Hobie Cat sailboats, windsurf boards, and snorkel gear. Read more: Some of the Best Activities in Belize are Free (for our Guests!)

In 2016 we also unveiled a new bar menu with fun tropical drinks and lower prices (read more: Happy Hour just got...) and added LegaSea to our fleet of boats. For the ultimate in comfort, we put king beds in every cabana. And we added new pool furniture (with cup holders!) so you can relax and do nothing for as long as you like.

So that's at least 5 great reasons to visit us in Belize, for the first time or as returning friends. What are you waiting for?!

Happy Hour just got...

Happy Hour just got...

HAPPY HOUR JUST GOT HAPPIER -- AND MORE AFFORDABLE!

We enjoy providing a piece of paradise where guests and friends can unplug, unwind, and restore themselves. Whether you choose to lay in a hammock all day, or stay active with SCUBA diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking the jungle, everyone ends up in our Sand Bar lounge for refreshments.

Located in the lodge with amazing views of the Caribbean, the Sand Bar Lounge at St. George's Caye features complimentary Wi-Fi internet, fun games, and friendly bartenders. This is where much of the socializing and meeting new friends happens – a very happy place! (We like to call it all-day happy hour.)

WE'RE LISTENING...

Over the past few months some guests have mentioned that our drink prices in the lounge seem high. We're always listening to guest feedback and are committed to providing a great experience and very good value, so we dug into the pricing, our costs, and what options we had. We don't want guests worrying about the price of drinks in the bar -- we want you enjoying your time in Belize!

A few weeks ago Cap’n Ron got personally involved with our resort manager and the incredible service staff to review beverage inventory and pricing in the bar -- and they uncovered a variety of ways to increase the value and in many cases reduce the drink prices.

NEW BAR MENU

We just unveiled the new drink menu and are pleased to report that we now offer a majority of drinks in the $4 to $10 price range, with a 30% reduction on our average drink price! We have maintained very good brands, but reduced our costs through selective inventory reduction.

The new bar menu features a fun variety of tropical drinks in a kaleidoscope of colors, many with the quintessential fresh fruit and paper umbrella. Perhaps you'd like to quench your thirst with a Coco Loco, Sea Breeze, Funky Monkey, Blue Hole, or Belize Rum Freeze, all of which cost $10 or less on the new bar menu. Feel like splurging? Go for the rich and creamy Baileys Colada or the ultimate fruity drink, the Pineapple Bomber. The Sand Bar lounge also offers local beers, a selection of wines, and of course, a variety of sodas and juices.

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK

Cap'n Ron and the team at St. George's would like to thank our guests who provided feedback – if we don’t know about it, we can’t fix it! We know that both returning and new guests will appreciate the increased affordability of a great variety of tropical beverages.

Cheers!

Lionfish Dive Tournament a Success!

Lionfish Dive Tournament a Success!

The team at St. George's cares deeply about protecting the reef and the underwater world. Our Belize island resort is owned and managed by scuba divers and located less than a mile from the amazing Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

One of its biggest threats to the reef right now is the invasive species lion fish. These fast-breeding fish do not have any natural predators. To help keep the population under control, divers all over Belize and the Caribbean use spear guns to hunt these spiny, venomous fish. It takes skill, especially when removing the lionfish from the spear so that you don't get stung by one of their spines! But it's worth it because not only are you removing an invasive predator from the reef, but the delicate white fish is delicious to eat as well.

Over 1,000 Lionfish Removed from Reef during Dive Tournament!

Last week at St. George's Caye Resort we hosted our first "Save The Reef" Lionfish Dive Tournament with several teams of divers competing for biggest caught and most caught in one dive. It was a lot of fun and we hope to have even more divers involved next time. (Read more: Divers Keeping the Barrier Reef Healthy: Lionfish Tournament in October)

Most importantly, we are thrilled to report that combined the teams removed 1,016 lionfish from the reef! This is a huge impact in less than a week. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this possible. The coral reef thanks you too!

Want to Try Spear-Hunting Lionfish?

At St. George's we offer experienced divers the chance to participate in the Lionfish Dive Safari with our dive masters. It's an incredible way to expand your diving skills and do your part to help the reef. Get in touch with Cap'n Ron for more details and to schedule your Belize dive trip!

Seeking adventure in 2017? The experts say: Travel to Belize!

Seeking adventure in 2017? The experts say: Travel to Belize!

We love seeing Belize in the travel news because that means more people will discover this awesome country and want to visit! So we were pleased to see that Belize was selected as a "top adventure tour destination" to visit in 2017 by Stride Travel, a large search and review site for tours and adventure experiences.

You can read the press release here on Belize Breaking News.

EXPERIENCE THE BEST BELIZE ADVENTURES WITH A "REEF TO RAINFOREST" PACKAGE

Many travelers considering Belize want to spend time both in the jungle and on the beach and have a hard time deciding. We can help!

At St. George's Caye we offer four jungle/beach all-inclusive packages to choose from, so you can spend time on the mainland and on our island and have all of your meals and transportation included. Easy! We work with two different jungle lodges, each offering a different experience in a different part of the country, depending on your interests.

Packages with Mariposa Jungle Lodge & Tours

Located in the heart of Maya country in the Cayo district on the West side of Belize (near Guatemala), Mariposa Jungle Lodge offers a luxury jungle experience with 6 beautiful cabanas and a main lodge for meals. They have a swimming pool, jungle birdwatching tower, and hiking trails onsite. Plus a large variety of adventure, nature, and cultural tours led by their professional in-house tour guides of Mayan descent.

Packages with Caves Branch Jungle Lodge & Adventure Tours

Located near Belmopan in the center of the country, Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Jungle Lodge is truly in the jungle and focuses on providing fun adrenaline-fueled adventures for the whole family (it's not for everyone, they say so right on their website!). They have treehouse suites, a botanical walking trail, swimming pool, and many of the adventures are right on their property like waterfall repelling and cave tubing.

Jungle Beach Romance honeymoon/romance package

Twice The Paradise adventure package

CAN WE STAY AT AN ISLAND RESORT AND STILL SEE THE MAINLAND?

Yes, definitely! We know not everyone wants to sleep in the jungle and that is okay. You can stay on the beach in one of our private thatch cabanas and take advantage of our guided tours to see more of Belize.

At St. George's we offer a variety of day trips to the mainland so you can climb Mayan ruins or float through caves in an underground river or visit museums and the Belize Zoo. Our convenient central location only 7 miles from Belize City makes for quick travels back and forth for your jungle adventures (it's about a 20 minute boat ride each way).

The best part about staying at St. George's is how close we are to the reef - and with no other dive resorts nearby so you have privacy and seclusion. Explore the barrier reef while diving or snorkeling and you'll likely not see another boat or diver besides our group. You'll see a wide variety of coral and fish and even the occasional dolphin or manatee!

GET IN TOUCH TO PLAN YOUR 2017 BELIZE ADVENTURE!

Cap'n Ron has been visiting Belize for more than 18 years and is happy to share his experience to help you plan the perfect Belize all-inclusive vacation. Right now we're offering 10% off any jungle/beach package with Mariposa Jungle Lodge if you book by October 31, 2016. Good for travel now through December 2017. So what are you waiting for? :)

Divers Keeping the Barrier Reef Healthy: Lionfish Tournament in October

Divers Keeping the Barrier Reef Healthy: Lionfish Tournament in October

Lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean and they are voracious eaters, potentially devastating to the health of coral reefs. The dive team at St. George's Caye Resort is doing our part to rid the reef of these fast-breeding fish – and many guests who are experienced divers join our dive masters and "spear hunt" underwater! It's exciting and a fun way to control the lionfish population and a unique diving experience you can't find just anywhere. Learn more about Lionfish Dive Safari.

SIGN UP NOW FOR "SAVE THE REEF" LIONFISH TOURNAMENT

To step up our efforts to control the lionfish population, we are hosting a one-week Lionfish Tournament on October 8-15, 2016. To encourage participation, all tournament dives are half-price!

Divers can bring their own team, or join a team when they arrive. There will be fun prizes for the largest lionfish, smallest lionfish, and the most caught in one day. Come join the fun, help the reef, and maybe win a prize!

TOP TEN REASONS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ST. GEORGE’S CAYE RESORT LIONFISH TOURNAMENT:

6. You've wanted to try eating this excellent-tasting fish (our kitchen will prepare some of the day's catch!)

Flying to Belize Keeps Getting Easier (and Cheaper!)

Flying to Belize Keeps Getting Easier (and Cheaper!)

Two more direct flights to Belize City (BZE) from North America have been announced, making it even easier to get to our beautiful Central American country!

The world-class snorkeling and diving on the barrier reef, the Mayan ruins and jungle adventures, and the really friendly native people have all made Belize a popular travel destination over the past few years. Belizeans love showing off their country and the natural beauty, history, culture, food, and adventures.

But for a long time one of the barriers for people getting to Belize was the high cost of airfare. We are thrilled that is less and less of an issue as more airlines add routes to Belize such as Southwest Airlines and West Jet out of Canada!

We are finally seeing affordable airfare to Belize which means it's time for you to come and visit. Right?

NEW DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM DENVER AND TORONTO

Recently Southwest Airlines announced a second direct flight into Belize from the US, this time from Denver International Airport. They plan to start service on a trial basis in spring 2017 and based on demand, they will continue this route. Southwest also offers direct service through Houston Hobby International Airport.

Canadians are about to have their first direct flight from Canada to Belize on West Jet. The new route starts in October of this year, just in time for a fall vacation or winter holiday in the Caribbean!

Many Belize island resorts and jungle resorts have been offering specials to Canadians to help them afford a trip to Belize in 2016 since the Canadian dollar has been so weak. Like the awesome Canada Special Cap'n Ron is offering right now for a stay at St. George's Caye Resort!

AFFORDABLE AIRFARE TO BELIZE IS NOW A REALITY

Competition, especially from one of the low-price airfare leaders Southwest Airlines, means that all airlines flying into Belize have lowered their fares. Hooray!

It used to cost $800-$1000 roundtrip or more, even in low season. But now we are seeing roundtrip flights from many US cities for only $400! Even the bigger airlines like Delta Airlines and United Airlines now offer relatively cheap flights to Belize thanks to increased competition and increased demand.

And the increased demand makes sense. Look at how beautiful it is here!!

WHICH AIRLINES FLY INTO BELIZE

To help with your trip planning here is a list of the airlines that fly into Phillip S. Goldson International Airport in Belize City (BZE) and the connecting cities in North America and South America. Belize travelers from more far-off destinations like the UK, Europe, and Asia will need to connect through one of these airlines.

American Airlines Dallas/Ft. Worth, Miami
Avianca (Taca) San Salvador
Delta Airlines Los Angeles, Atlanta
Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby, Denver (spring 2017)
Tropic Air Cancun, Merida, Flores
United Airlines Houston, Newark (Chicago, seasonal)
US Airways  Charlotte, N.C.
West Jet Toronto (October 2016)

The Belize airport website keeps a current list of airlines serving BZE and it can be found here: http://www.pgiabelize.com/airlines.htm

TIPS FOR FLYING WITHIN BELIZE

For most visitors to Belize, once you arrive at the international airport you will need to take another flight -- what we commonly refer to as an island hopper flight. The two airlines in Belize are Maya Island Air and Tropic Air and both offer short flights to a handful of destinations within Belize and neighboring countries. This is by far the fastest and easiest way to get around the country as Belize has limited paved roads and public transportation options.

But if you stay with us on St. George's Caye, you don't have to worry about the time or cost of an additional flight. Yes, really!

Your airport greeting and roundtrip ground/sea transfers to our Belize island resort are part of your all-inclusive vacation package. Plus, our proximity to the mainland and Belize City (only 7 miles offshore) means you don't waste precious vacation time traveling to your destination. You are on our island in the Caribbean within an hour of exiting customs at the airport, compared to the 2-4 hours it can take to get to resorts in San Pedro and Placencia.

As we like to say here at St. George's, with us you get an extra day of vacation!

Is there a difference between an overwater cabana and an over-the-water bungalow?

Is there a difference between an overwater cabana and an over-the-water bungalow?

You’re dreaming about a tropical vacation and you soon find yourself spending hours searching the internet for the perfect little room on the beach. As you explore exotic destinations near and far (Bali! Belize! Hawaii!), drooling over the tropical rooms, some of them over the water, you will no doubt come across a wide array of descriptions, features, and amenities. You will notice that rooms may be called bungalows, cabanas, casitas, huts, etc. – with descriptions such as “private thatch cabana,” “thatch casita,” “romantic beach bungalow,” “over water casita,” “overwater bungalow,” “private cabana over the water,” “rustic beachfront cabana,” and more.

If you are like us, you start wondering, “What is the difference between a cabana and a bungalow? Why all these different terms?”  I just want a quiet, peaceful, relaxing setting on the beach, with a clean room by the water where I can sip my drink, get five-star service, and enjoy some SCUBA diving and snorkeling...

CABANA vs. BUNGALOW vs. CASITA

b2ap3_thumbnail_OverwaterCabanaViewInside.jpg

Of course you can go to your dictionary, or ask Siri – and you'll get the basic definition for “bungalow” and “cabana” and “casita.” But the fact is there is no one definition for these rooms and no one enforcing rules on what resorts call their rooms! Even identically appointed rooms at two different resorts can be called a cabana by one place, and called bungalow by another.

But the good news is: you don’t need to worry about it!

It’s not what the room is called that matters, but whether the features and the amenities fit what you want:

  • Do you want to stay in a regular hotel room, or something exotic and different?
  • Do you need air conditioning? TV? Room service? What other amenities are important?
  • Do you want to be on the beach, or are you looking for the “over the water” experience?
  • Do you want to be on a private island, or in a touristy area with beach bars?

As you explore your options (here is a great site: http://www.overwaterbungalows.net), look at the pictures, read room descriptions thoroughly, and it can even a good idea to contact the resort and ask them to confirm that the pictures on their website are current and accurately portray the condition of the rooms now, especially if you will be visiting a remote location that is less regulated.

ROOM AMENITIES AT ST. GEORGE'S CAYE

b2ap3_thumbnail_overwater-cabanas.jpg

If this is the first time you’ve traveled outside of the US, be prepared for the rooms to be a little different! The style, charm, and local aspects of the room will be a welcome change from the more sterile environment in which most North Americans live.

For example, the 12 cabanas (or bungalows, or casitas!) at St. George’s Caye Resort are far more than a place to sleep—each private cabana is like a work of art built by local staff using beautiful native hardwoods and featuring authentic thatch roofs, handmade curtains, and local artwork. Your bungalow also has a covered front porch (with handmade hammock!) where your coffee and fresh squeezed juice will be delivered each morning at sunrise.

RUSTIC BEACH ELEGANCE

b2ap3_thumbnail_St.GeorgesCaye-1099.jpg

We describe our cabanas as “rustic elegance” because they combine high-end amenities with a beach-hut experience. The en suite bathroom has Turkish towels, bathrobes, and a heated shower that is small and efficient (we filter all of our own water on the island), and the air conditioning works well combined with ceiling and floor fans to keep you cool, but not like it would in a standard hotel room (our rooms do not have insulation or drywall). The rooms do not have televisions or phones, and internet is only found in the main lodge/bar (time to unplug!). For most people this is exactly what they want—a true tropical experience with thatch ambience and ocean breezes.

Check out our photo gallery to see more of our cabanas.

EASY TRAVEL TO AN EXOTIC LOCATION

Belize offers the shortest travel time to over-water bungalows from the US (just over 2 hours from Texas airports!) and for a much lower price tag than many of the resorts in Tahiti, Bora Bora, and the South Pacific.

So whether you are planning a romantic honeymoon, an anniversary trip, a SCUBA diving adventure, a family reunion or holiday, or just getting away with friends, if you want a thatch bungalow at a private island resort in Belize, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.! (And remember, we include your airport transfers at no additional charge making travel even quicker and easier!)

Some of the Best Activities in Belize are Free (for our Guests!)

Some of the Best Activities in Belize are Free (for our Guests!)

When planning a trip to Belize, guests often ask about the best available activities, both in the ocean exploring the Belize Barrier Reef and on the mainland exploring the jungles.

"I’ve got only 7 days, how much can I fit in?"

The answers is: a lot! Especially with our island's convenient location only 7 miles from Belize City and less than a mile from the Belize Barrier Reef - making both ocean and jungle adventures very easily accessible.

b2ap3_thumbnail_zip-lining.JPG

"What can I do that I’ve never done before? Can I learn to do something new, like sailing, snorkeling, or kayaking?"

Belize offers a variety of adventures from zip-lining through the jungle canopy and cave-tubing down a river, to ocean activities like diving, snorkeling, and sailing. At our resort there are many opportunities to learn a new hobby or try something new - our local guides and friendly staff are here to help!

b2ap3_thumbnail_Oliver.jpg

"How can I stretch my vacation dollar? Do you offer any FREE activities?"

If you're like most visitors to Belize, you want to squeeze in as much fun as possible (you can rest when you get home, right?). As you plan out your vacation budget, keep in mind that at St. George's Caye Resort we include many free water activities to make sure you get the most out of your time in Belize. Read on to learn more!

b2ap3_thumbnail_sunrisekayak.jpg

FREE ACTIVITIES AT ST. GEORGE'S CAYE

Reflecting on our own experiences with vacations, when we planned what we would offer at St. George’s Caye we wanted to include a mix of free activities and premium tours. We knew many people would happily pay for valet SCUBA diving on the Belize Barrier Reef and the famous Blue Hole, guided excursions to the jungle to learn about Mayan ruins and culture, and to visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

b2ap3_thumbnail_o-GREAT-BLUE-HOLE-facebook.jpg

But we also knew guests would have lots of "down time" on the island - maybe a free afternoon after diving in the morning, or a day to unwind without a planned activity - and many need to be mindful of their vacation budget, even if they want to do it all.

So that's why we provide a variety of complimentary water sports equipment and fun things to do that won’t cost you anything and let you experience the best of a Belize island resort...

b2ap3_thumbnail_freeactivities.jpg

KAYAKING

We have a number of kayaks, both single and tandem (sure, your partner will paddle and let you sit back and enjoy!). View mangroves with a variety of sea birds, dolphins and manatees (yes, our guests see these incredible animals on a regular basis), southern rays, spotted eagle rays, lobster, etc.

b2ap3_thumbnail_SUPclearwater2.jpg

STAND-UP PADDLE BOARDS

The leeward (calm) side of our island is a large bay surrounded by mature mangroves. The water is generally about 2 to 4 feet deep, so no worries if you fall (or decide to take a refreshing dip in the ocean). This is great exercise, good for core strength, and totally fun!

b2ap3_thumbnail_Dive_Snork.jpg

SNORKELING

You can use our snorkel gear any time and see a variety of sea life around our docks, or right off the leeward beach. We also provide guided snorkel trips over the coral reef, just a few minutes from St. George’s Caye, for a fee. This is well worth it because the reef is where you will see the most wildlife and colorful fish, and your guide will point things out that you could easily miss. BUT, you don’t have to pay to snorkel if you don't want to.

b2ap3_thumbnail_View-of-St-Georges-Caye-from-Sandbar.JPG

WINDSURFING

We have had some of the most dedicated and well-traveled windsurfers visit us at St. George’s Caye and tell us that there is no place in the world where the conditions for windsurfing exceed what we have right in front of the caye! Glide and fly over the sparkling water alongside the Belize Barrier Reef – a magic carpet ride on water.

SAILING

We have three Hobie Cat sailing vessels for complimentary guest use. Experienced sailors visit nearby islands when the winds are good (about 98% of the time), and guests who do not know how to sail are surprised to find that our staff will take them out, teach them the basics, and that they can then go out on their own right away.

b2ap3_thumbnail_PoolsideLounging.JPG

SALINE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE 24/7

Sparkling, clear, refreshing, warm enough to walk right in, long enough to swim laps, never crowded, pop-up water volleyball, lounge chairs poolside, sunning deck, shaded area with hammocks – need we say more?

b2ap3_thumbnail_TrySCUBAinPool2.JPG

TRY SCUBA DIVING IN THE POOL

We offer a no-risk program for guests to try scuba diving in our pool with a dive instructor. Get a safety briefing on the equipment and then try breathing underwater and learn a few basic diving safety procedures. Love it? Head on out to the reef for a Resort Dive down to 30 feet - or sign up to get Open Water Dive Certified!

b2ap3_thumbnail_BeachChairVolleyball3.jpg

AND MORE!

Bocce ball, bar games, crab races, shell finding, magic tricks (when Leo is bartending!), card games, board games, and lots of hammock time, reading time, and time to get lost in the moment.

So please, come down and dive with dolphins and sea turtles, hunt some lion fish with us, go to the jungle with the best tour guides - but make sure you also plan to fill many hours with free use of our non-motorized water sports equipment and relaxing around the island. Kayaking, diving, and snorkeling offer some of the best ways to see the beauty of Belize. See you in paradise!

Making It Easier for Canadians to Visit Belize in 2016

Making It Easier for Canadians to Visit Belize in 2016

As a fellow commonwealth nation, we see a lot of Canadians in Belize, both as tourists and as ex-pats who've made Belize their new home. Especially in the winter months, known as "high season" in Belize, we tend to have many Canadian visitors seeking sunshine, warm waters, and world-class scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing on the Belize Barrier Reef.

But ever since the decline of the Canadian dollar, we've had fewer and fewer Canadian guests. And this makes us sad. We love friendly Canadians!

So, to help more Canadians afford a 2016 trip to Belize, Cap'n Ron has rolled out a new special offer for Canadians only!

b2ap3_thumbnail_DSC07869.JPG

For trips now through December 17th you get full value for your Canadian dollar. That means your room rate is in Canadian dollars instead of US dollars, saving you 20%, 30%, or more on a private thatch cabana in paradise! You can choose from Overwater bungalows on the sunset side, beachfront cabanas on the sunrise side, or a garden cabana nestled in the center of the resort.

b2ap3_thumbnail_OverwaterCabanaViewInside.jpg

Interested in an all-inclusive resort package? You can get the special room rate in Canadian dollars combined with any of the Adventure, Dive, Romance, or Relaxation Packages we offer.

Combine this great room rate with the incredibly affordable airfares to Belize City from many North American cities, and your dream trip to Belize in 2016 could become a reality!

b2ap3_thumbnail_o-GREAT-BLUE-HOLE-facebook.jpg
Visit Mayan ruins in the jungle, dive the Blue Hole and other epic dive sites in Belize, float on inner tubes down a jungle river through caves (called cave tubing), or simply relax on our secluded island, napping in hammocks, taking a dip in the saline pool, or getting a massage in the Island Spa.

Learn more about our special rates for Canadians on the Special Offers page of our website.

We hope to see you in paradise soon!
